Dilute the dye It is advisable to dilute or cut the dye before using it to get a better finish by applying multiple layers of the diluted dye. While it may be possible to dye the leather item using the undiluted dye, there may be blotches in some areas. If all the dye has been used, there will be no dye left to cover the blotches. Applying multiple coats ensures a more even finish. In some cases, a dye reducer may be sold with the dye, while in other cases, the dye should be diluted based on the type of dye. The water based dyes should be diluted with water, while for alcohol based dyes, alcohol is recommended for dilution.

Applying the dye Using a cotton rag, the dye should applied to the leather surface in a circular fashion, so that it will form a thin layer on the entire surface completely. The leather item should be kept aside for some time, so that the dye applied will dry. To get an even color, it is recommended that several thin layers of the dye should be applied. After applying each layer, the dye applied should be allowed to dry. This coat application should continue till the desired color is reached. After this the leather item should be kept for drying for at least 24 hours, to dry the dye completely

Conditioning the leather The leather conditioner which is waxed based should be applied only when the final coat of dye has dried completely. During the dyeing process the leather may get dehydrated, and the conditioner will help in rehydrating the leather, forming a protective layer on the surface. The conditioner will also help in sealing the color of the dye. Like the dye, the conditioner should also be applied using a cotton rag which is clean in a circular motions, so that the entire surface is covered. The conditioner should be allowed to dry and then it can be wiped with a clean cloth.
