Though people use textiles and fabrics extensively all their life, the school curriculum in india is poorly developed, they are not taught much formally about textile, fabric properties. While purchasing the fabric or textiles or garments, the buyer should be aware of the properties of the fabric. Some of the important considerations of the textile are
Durability - how long it can be used. For example though cotton is fashionable, it is not very durable. Cotton after a few years often gets torn or damaged easily when compared to some synthetic materials. It will also tear more easily. Though wearing synthetic is considered low
Comfort - though cotton is less durable, many prefer it because it is comfortable
Price -synthetic textiles are often cheap
Ease of stitching- it is easier to stitch cotton clothes, while synthetic materials are more slippery, especially on sewing machines
Wrinkle proof - cotton clothes get crumpled easily, and have to starched or ironed before wearing them. Many synthetic materials are designed, so that they do not get crumpled. Wrinkle proof clothes for men are more easily available for men, many companies are selling shirts and pants which do not get crumpled. Women face a problem, especially for ethnic wear. While travelling, clothes get crumpled, and it is often difficult to get them ironed while in a new city or town
Water retention, drying. for those who do not use a vehicle for traveling, it is very important to consider the water retention of the fabric. During heavy rains, despite wearing a raincoat, a person can become very wet. This reduces the immunity and the person will fall sick if they wear the same wet clothes for a longer period of time. Hence it is better to wear clothes of a fabric which will dry quickly. Thick cotton fabric retains water for a very long time, and unless a person will remove the wet clothes, they will fall sick
Also the clothes have to be dried after washing, and it can take 3-4 days to dry cotton clothes when it rains heavily and moisture levels are high.
